How Is a Facelift Performed?

Turn back the clock! No, we don’t have a time machine, but with a facelift you don’t need one. After surgery, patients often enjoy a rejuvenated look that is 5-10 years younger. Results are lasting and very natural looking when performed by the highly skilled plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Epstein. Are you ready to learn more? What Happens During a Facelift?

We perform facelift surgeries on an outpatient basis in our surgical center, Northbrook Plastic Surgery. It is fully accredited and offers patients the highest standard of available care. On the morning of your surgery you’ll arrive at the surgery center and will be prepped for your procedure. We’ll give you detailed information about how to prepare for your surgery before you come in.

One of the first things Dr. Epstein will do on the morning of a facelift is to mark the skin. He will make important markings on the face with marker. The skin hangs differently when you’re laying down in surgery. By marking areas of volume loss and sagging we can see which areas need treatment even after the skin has shifted. This essentially becomes a road map to address all of your problem areas during surgery.

Once you’re in the operating room you’ll be placed under a deep sedation.  A board certified anesthesiologist will carefully monitor you throughout the procedure. You won’t be aware of what is happening during your procedure.

There are several different methods for performing a facelift. Your procedure will vary depending on the techniques used and any complementary procedures that may take place in conjunction with your facelift. Dr. Epstein and the staff at MAE Plastic Surgery will  give you a better idea of what to expect during your consultation and as we prepare for surgery. Typically incisions are made high in the hairline, in front of the ear, and behind the ear to the lower scalp.

Once incisions are made we separate the skin and muscle, remove excess skin and fat, and tighten muscles and connective tissues. Stitches are used to secure layers of skin and to close incisions.   We often perform the facelift in conjunction with other procedures like fat grafting or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The entire procedure takes 2-4 hours, depending on the complexity and extent of your surgery.

After your surgery is complete you’ll go into recovery where you’ll wake up from anesthesia. In most instances, Dr. Epstein has his facelift patients stay over night for an extended period of observation.
