Gummy Bear Implants… A Sweet Option to Consider for Your Breast Augmentation

Since their approval by the FDA in 2012, high-strength silicone gel implants, commonly referred to as “gummy bear” or “gummy” implants, have become increasingly popular due to their natural look and feel. These form-stable implants got their unique nickname because of their similarity in texture and feel to the classic candy. Like its namesake confection, when you cut a gummy bear implant in half, it, too, is stable and retains its shape.

More and more plastic surgeons throughout the country are choosing to use this new generation of breast implants. Personally, I like that they offer a variety of shapes, from fully round to more oblong, mimicking the variations that occur in natural breasts. These options allow me to have even more control over the breasts’ final shape and silhouette, as they can be tailored to fit the patient’s body type and desired result.

Another benefit of the gummy implants is their unique textured surface, resulting in a decreased risk of capsular contraction. Capsular contraction is an immune response that can cause scar tissue to form around the implants, making the breasts harden and look or feel different. The use of gummy bear implants has been shown to reduce this problem from occurring.

In addition to carrying less long-term risks, like capsular contraction mentioned above, the implants have also been shown to have less rippling and leakage over time. Overall, with gummy bear implants, patients experience fewer complications.

To be fair, there are some items that should be noted when considering gummy bear implants, including the price; which is slightly higher than the previous generation of silicone breast implants and saline. However, with increased longevity due to decreased incidents of rupture and capsular contracture, gummy bear implants are typically the more cost-effective option in the long run.

In addition, because the gummy bear implant gel is thicker, a slightly longer incision is necessary in order to insert them properly. However, despite these drawbacks, my patients who have chosen gummy bear implants, have been extremely pleased with their outcomes.
