What Is an Eyelid Lift?

An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. It can address many common eyelid problems including sagging eyelids, fatty pouches under the eye, and excess skin on the upper eyelids. It often makes the eyes appear larger and less tired.

Blepharoplasty can be performed on its own but is often paired with other facial surgeries like a facelift or browlift.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a popular procedure for both men and women. Are you a good candidate for this procedure? Come in for a consultation and personalized treatment advice. The best candidates for an eyelid lift generally struggle with at least one of the following problems:

  • Hanging or loose skin on the upper eyelids
  • Puffy bags under the eyes of the lower lids or the corners of the upper lids
  • Excess or crepe skin of the lower lids
  • Sagging lower eyelids

Patients should be in overall good health and ready to commit to a surgical procedure. We’ll help you determine if an eyelid lift is a good fit during your consultation.

The Eyelid Lift Procedure- What to Expect

Before your eyelid lift we’ll meet with you and discuss your goals for surgery. Your surgical experience will vary depending on the areas being treated and the problems you’re experiencing. We’ll give you a better idea of what to expect during your consultation, but here are some basic steps we follow during most eyelid lifts.

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery- A thin incision is placed in the crease of the upper eyelid, where the scar will be hidden once it is healed. Fat deposits and excess skin are removed, and the skin and muscles are tightened to restore a more youthful appearance. Finally, the incisions are closed. Patients return home to recover shortly after surgery.
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery- For lower eyelid surgery a small incision is made along the lash line or inside of the eyelid. Fat is redistributed or removed. We’ll also remove excess skin and tighten the muscles in the lower eyelid. The incisions are closed and you’ll return home to heal.

All eyelid lifts are performed at our surgical facility, typically on an outpatient basis. We’ll focus on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on your needs.

Not Just Cosmetic- Eyelid Surgery May Improve Your Vision

Blepharoplasty has many cosmetic benefits, but some patients also notice improvement in their vision after the procedure. Hanging upper eyelids can block the eye and reduce the field of vision. By removing this excess skin, you can bring your eyes, and your vision, out of hiding again.

FAQs About Eyelid Surgery

Are you thinking about eyelid surgery? It is common to have questions about the procedure. We’re sharing answers to some common questions below and will happily answer any other questions you may have during your consultation.

  • Will I Have Visible Scars After an Eyelid Lift? – Many of our patients worry about facial scars after facial plastic surgery. Thankfully, blepharoplasty is one procedure with very limited scarring. Each incision is carefully hidden to ensure little to no scarring after you’ve healed. For upper eyelid procedures the incision is hidden in the eyelid’s crease, completely unseen unless your eyes are closed. For lower eyelid procedures the incision is placed under the eyelid or along the lash line. The incisions may be visible at first, but they should practically disappear as the scars mature.
  • How Much Work Will I Miss After Blepharoplasty? – You’ll be back to work and other routine activities quickly after an eyelid lift. Plan on missing about a week of work and avoiding strenuous activities for 3-4 weeks. Most patients resume light activity in just a couple days.
  • How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Take? – Eyelid surgery takes approximately 1-2 hours, depending on the areas being treated. It pairs well with other facial procedures including facelift surgery.
  • How Long Do Blepharoplasty Results Last? – Blepharoplasty provides long lasting correction for sagging upper and lower eyelids. Many patients won’t need surgery again. Of course, aging will continue, and some sagging may reoccur, often years down the road. Many of our eyelid surgery patients are delighted with their results, even years after their procedure.
