The Do’s and Don’ts of Rhinoplasty Recovery

After rhinoplasty, you’ll spend a few weeks recovering from the procedure. During this time, your body is healing and your new nose is very delicate and sensitive. This guide will teach you what to do and what not to do to ensure a successful recovery. Contact us with any questions throughout the recovery process.

Do Follow Your Recovery Instructions

We’ll give you detailed recovery instructions after your surgery. Follow these closely and ask us if you have any questions.

Do Come to Follow Up Appointments

You’ll meet with us several times as you recover. Even if you’re feeling great, come to your follow up appointments. We want to be sure you’re healing properly and in the unlikely event of complications, spot problems early on.

Don’t Exercise Too Soon

You’ll need to avoid exercise for three weeks after surgery. If you play contact sports, you will be restricted from those activities for 6-8 weeks.   We’ll work with you to create a timeline for returning to these activities and help you to protect your nose from damage and injury.

Don’t Skip Medications

You may receive prescriptions for antibiotics, pain relievers, etc. Take your medications as needed. If you have any reactions to your medications, let us know and we’ll find other options. These medications help you to stay comfortable and avoid infections as you heal.

Do Rest and Recover

One of the most important things you can do as you recover from rhinoplasty is to rest. Get plenty of rest and take it easy. You’ll be able to return to work about a week after surgery.

Don’t Wear Glasses

Glasses and sunglasses can press down on your healing nose, creating deformities. Avoid using glasses and contacts until you’ve been cleared by Dr. Epstein.   If you need to use glasses for vision, let us know and we’ll show you some tricks for safely wearing glasses after rhinoplasty.

Do Use Sunscreen

After surgery, your skin is much more susceptible to sunburn. Even worse, you’ll be less likely to notice if you’re burning. Use sunscreen and wear a wide brimmed hat after surgery. Try to stay out of the sun until you’ve healed.

Do Be Patient

It can take up to a year to see your full rhinoplasty results. You’ll look great, long before then, but be patient as you wait for the swelling to resolve. Recovery is a slow process, but the results are worth the wait.
