What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly called nose reshaping surgery or a “nose job,” is a procedure used to improve the appearance of your nose, including its size, shape, width, or bumps. It can also correct the nasal tip, nostrils, nasal asymmetry, or a depression on the bridge.

Many times, the facial imbalance may be related to other facial features such as the chin, cheeks, or lower jaw. Facial implant procedures to correct these imbalances may be combined with rhinoplasty to achieve overall facial harmony.

Functional rhinoplasty is also often performed at the same time as cosmetic rhinoplasty. In this case, obstructions to breathing are corrected while aesthetic changes are made to the nose.

Nose surgery is a highly intricate and customized surgery based on your anatomy and the results you want to achieve. Dr. Epstein is a rhinoplasty specialist with many years of experience performing successful nose surgeries for his patients.

Why do men and women seek Rhinoplasty?

Men, women, and children frequently seek nose surgery to correct a variety of issues, including breathing abnormalities. Cosmetic improvements include excessive length or width of the nose, large nostrils, a crooked or broken nose, a bump or depression on the bridge of the nose, a hooked nasal tip, or asymmetries.

Computer Digital Imaging – Your Ideal Nose!

As part of your rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Epstein uses an advanced computer-imaging software program to help you visualize your surgical outcome. After speaking with you to gain a better understanding of your goals and expectations, Dr. Epstein will take several pictures of your nose from different angles, upload them onto a computer, and work with the software to create a variety of surgical options.

It is important to remember that the manipulated rhinoplasty photos through digital imaging are not a guarantee of your result, but they will ensure that you and your doctor share a common surgical goal and that the expectations are realistic.

After the imaging is complete, you will have access to all of your photos, including the digitally altered version on a private, password-protected program that you can access on the web anywhere anytime. In the majority of cases, Dr. Epstein’s patients have found that their actual rhinoplasty results are even better than the digitally enhanced versions because of some of the restraints that are inherent in altering a photo.

How is nose surgery performed?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure performed at our facility, Northbrook Plastic Surgery, located in the North Shore Chicago area. There are two rhinoplasty techniques: A closed procedure, which involves no external incision. Instead, the incision is hidden inside the nose. This does not afford the surgeon a great deal of access to the internal structures of the nose, however, so it cannot be used in all cases.

An open procedure involves an incision made across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils). The scar is largely hidden on the underside of the nose.

Through the incision sites, soft tissue that covers the nose is raised, and the structure of the nose is reshaped. In some cases, cartilage might be taken from one area of the nose and grafted into another area.

Rhinoplasty takes 1-3 hours to complete in most cases, but some patients may require more time.

What to expect during the Rhinoplasty recovery period:

  • Bruising and swelling around the eyes are normal and will fade within 1-2 weeks after surgery.
  • You may experience discomfort within the nose and other areas of the head, which can be controlled with medication.
  • Stuffiness and some light bleeding from the nose are common during the first few days.
  • A small external splint will be taped to your nose to protect the new shape for approximately 5-7 days after surgery.
  • You will feel more comfortable sleeping on your back for 1-2 weeks, and elevating your head with pillows will help to reduce swelling.
  • You can return to light activity within a few days, or as you feel ready.
  • You may resume full activity within 3-4 weeks.
