Cosmetic rhinoplasty or nose reshaping, often called a “nose job”, improves the appearance of your nose. The following is a list of some of the aesthetic issues that can be corrected through cosmetic rhinoplasty:
- Shorten a long nose
- Narrow a wide nose
- Build up a flat nose
- Correct bumps or humps
- Correct a crooked nose
- Fix a broken nose
- Fix a depression on the bridge
- Remove a hooked nasal tip
- Correct nasal asymmetries
- Make large nostrils smaller
If needed, functional rhinoplasty is often performed simultaneously with cosmetic rhinoplasty. Dr. Epstein can correct obstructions to breathing while also improving the look of your nose.

Computer digital imaging – your ideal nose!
As part of your rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Epstein uses an advanced computer-imaging software program to help you visualize your surgical outcome. After speaking with you to gain a better understanding of your goals and expectations, Dr. Epstein will take several pictures of your nose from different angles, upload them onto a computer, and work with the software to create a variety of surgical options.
It is important to remember that manipulated rhinoplasty photos through digital imaging do not guarantee those specific results, but they will ensure that you and Dr. Epstein share a common surgical goal and that the expectations are realistic.
After the imaging is complete, you will have access to all of your photos, including the digitally altered version on a private, password protected program that you can access on the web anywhere anytime. In the majority of cases, Dr. Epstein’s patients have found that their actual rhinoplasty results are even better than the digitally enhanced versions because of some of the restraints that are inherent in altering a photo.
The cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic and deep sedation. You will be continuously monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist in an accredited office-based surgical facility.
There are two possible techniques: closed and open rhinoplasty. A closed procedure involves no external incision. Instead, the incision is hidden inside the nose. Because this doesn’t afford Dr. Epstein a great deal of access to the internal structures of the nose, this technique is not appropriate for all patients.
An open procedure involves an incision made across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils). The scar is not easily noticeable on the underside of the nose.
Then, through either of these incision sites, the soft tissue that covers the nose is raised, and the structure of the nose is reshaped. In some cases, cartilage might be taken from one area of the nose and grafted into another area. If there is insufficient cartilage within the nose, Dr. Epstein may have to take cartilage from the ear. However, this is rarely done.
Rhinoplasty takes 1-3 hours to complete in most cases, but some patients may require more time.
What to expect during the rhinoplasty recovery period
It is normal to experience bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose for 1-2 weeks after rhinoplasty. Light bleeding and stuffiness is also common for a few days. However, your discomfort can be controlled with medication. You can reduce swelling by elevating your head with pillows and sleeping on your back for the first couple of weeks.
A small external splint will be taped to your nose to protect the new shape for about 5-7 days. Most people take a few days to a week off from work and resume full activity in 3-4 weeks.
Dr. Epstein will give you full post-operative instructions, and he will monitor your progress to make sure that you are healing properly and satisfied with your result.
