The surgeons of Chicago’s MAE Plastic Surgery provide breast augmentation with stunning outcomes. They are well known for their education, extensive training, and patient satisfaction. When you come to MAE Plastic Surgery, you are treated like family in our comfortable patient center and our state-of-the-art, fully accredited surgical facility.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, every year nearly 300,000 women undergo a breast augmentation in the United States alone. The vast majority of these women improve the appearance of their breasts with the use of Saline or Silicone breast implants, but another method known as fat grafting is gaining popularity. This technique uses your own body fat for your breast augmentation.

Why Do Women Seek Breast Augmentation in Chicago?
There are many reasons why you might feel dissatisfied with your breasts. It could be due to sagging of the breasts brought on by aging, changes to the size and shape of the breasts due to pregnancy, naturally occurring asymmetrical breasts, or simply wanting breasts that are proportional to your frame. Depending on your specific case, you may need to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to position breasts higher on the chest.
A breast augmentation at our office can help you achieve your desired breast shape, size, and cleavage. Once they see their results, our patients have reported feeling more feminine and self-confident. They are excited about their newfound look and have an improved self-esteem.
Whatever your reason for wanting a breast augmentation, we would like to meet with you for a one-on-one consultation at our Northbrook office to discuss how we can help you enjoy the many benefits of this surgery.
Types of Breast Implants
MAE Plastic Surgery offers a customized solution tailored to your unique body type and desired aesthetic goals. Your breast implant choice is vital to this process, and you’ll be able to choose between a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials.
Once the saline implants are inserted into the breasts, they’re filled with a sterile salt water solution much like your body’s natural fluids. They require a smaller incision because they are inserted before they are even filled. Depending on your desired results, your surgeon will help you choose the correct shape and size of the implants.
The FDA recommends saline breast implants for patients 18 years of age or older. In the case of a rare rupture to the implant, the leakage of solution into your body does not present any health risks, but it will lead to an immediate deflation and deformity of the breast. Many women also feel that saline breast implants don’t feel natural once they’re inserted.
These breast implants have a more natural feel than saline. Silicone implants are essentially a silicone gel encased within a silicone shell. Available in several shapes and sizes, silicone implants are incredibly diverse; your surgeon and our team will consult with you about their size, shape, and optimal results—while factoring in your body size and frame, of course.
The newest shaped, cohesive gel “Gummy Bear” implants can now produce even more natural-appearing results, and they have less of a risk of capsular contracture, which is a rare but potential complication.
Approved by the FDA for women 22 years or older, silicone implants offer a lower risk of skin rippling as compared to saline implants.
Chicago Breast Augmentation Incision Options
You and your surgeon will decide between three different incision options for your breast augmentation. These include an incision made below your breast (inframammary), an incision made through your armpit (transaxillary), or an incision made along the dark-pigmented edge of the nipple (peri-areolar).
This is the most common incision—especially for silicone implants. Our surgeons prefer this choice because there is a decreased risk of malposition of the implants, less risk of loss of sensation to the nipple, and a decreased risk of developing capsular contracture.
Additionally, since this incision has been used for decades in the U.S., the overall risk of complications is rare. The inframammary incision is made under the fold of the breast, where the scar is less conspicuous.
A transaxillary incision is made under the armpit. This ensures that there are no visible scars near your breasts. Oftentimes, your surgeon will use an endoscope to help visualize the breast augmentation. The endoscope helps the surgeon see blood vessels that need to be coagulated and create the pocket where the implant is placed.
Because the incision location is farther from the breast, it’s easier to use a saline implant that is filled after insertion, versus using a silicone gel implant.
This incision is made along the lower edge of the areola. Because the edge of the areola is darker than the skin, the incision is barely visible when it’s healed. The disadvantage of a peri-areolar incision is that it may cause a loss of sensation in the nipples, and may affect the patient’s ability to breastfeed in the future.
Implant Placement Options
There are two breast placement options for the surgeon to choose from: above the muscle (subglandular/subfascial placement) or below the muscle (submuscular placement). You and your surgeon will decide which option will be most pragmatic for your body type.
Subglandular Implant Placement
Here, the implant is placed above the pectoral muscle, but below all of the breast tissue. Since the implant is placed above the muscle tissue, the surgery and healing process is faster than submuscular placement.
This implant position can be used when a woman has enough breast tissue to cover the desired breast implant. It’s also necessary to use this pocket for women who have a misshapen (tubular) breast.
Some disadvantages of subglandular augmentation are the likeliness of the implant’s edges being visible, it’s more difficult to see mammogram results, and a mild increase in the risk of capsular contracture.
Submuscular Implant Placement
With this option, the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle. This might be preferable if you don’t have enough breast tissue because this technique is better at camouflaging the implants for a more natural look.
Oftentimes, there is less rippling and fewer visible edges of the implant with this kind of placement. The healing time, on the other hand, is slightly longer with this placement option.
Your Recovery from Breast Augmentation Surgery
You will be given written instructions to how you can successfully recover from your breast augmentation surgery. You will be guided on how to prevent infection and when to schedule a follow up with your surgeon.
After surgery, you may feel sore for several days. Pain medication will be prescribed to help reduce any discomfort during your recovery. Bruising should be minimal, but swelling can last for several weeks. Due to the swelling, the final results of your breast augmentation will not be visible for a few weeks. You will, however, see an immediate difference in the appearance of your breasts!
You should be able to return to work within a week after your surgery. During your recovery, it’s advised that you wear a surgical bra and limit your physical activity for several weeks. Resting and sleeping are important to the healing process. You should sleep and rest on your back at all times during your recovery. Regular examinations and routine mammograms can help ensure that any complications are detected and treated early.
Exercise After Breast Augmentation Surgery
It is important to listen to your body and be patient when it comes to resuming your exercise routine after breast augmentation surgery.
Your body is the best indicator as to whether you’re ready to undergo strenuous activity. Returning to exercise too early can cause serious setbacks like muscle tears, implant shifts, and internal bleeding. When in doubt, err on the side of waiting.
Our team will be an excellent resource to advise you with your personal post operation workouts.
While some surgeons recommend massaging breast implants, our surgeons typically advise against it, as we often use the latest generation implants that don’t require massaging (and may cause the implants to move to a suboptimal position, or cause anatomic/tear-drop implants to rotate). Our surgeons will discuss the pros and cons of massaging your new implants with you.
Choosing a Surgeon
Although breast augmentation is common and less risky than 30 years ago, choosing a surgeon for any surgery is of paramount importance. Sadly, any doctor with a license can legally perform breast augmentation surgery despite having no specialized training.
It is vital for your plastic surgeon to have the right qualifications and credentials. This includes formal training in a plastic surgery residency. It also includes extensive experience, and satisfied patients.
Don’t forget the support staff. Make sure they are professional, friendly and caring. These will be the people to lean on during your breast augmentation recovery. Make sure you are comfortable with the entire team.
It is important to do your research and visit with the doctor personally. It is important to visit the facility where the surgery will take place. Don’t rush! You should make the time to get well informed.

“I did a lot of research on plastic surgeons in the Chicago area looking for one who I thought would best meet my breast augmentation needs … I was looking for a surgeon who is comfortable working with all the implant types and sizes, placements, and incision locations to select a method and product appropriate for my age, frame, and self-image. Dr. Krochmal spent nearly two hours with me during consultation to come up with what we both agreed was the best plan … Everything proceeded smoothly from initial consultation to final follow-up. I was very impressed. My recovery was monitored by the doctor in three follow-up appointments that were quite routine because I experienced no complications, and my incisions were healing beautifully.” ~ November 19, 2016
