Scared of Scars? 5 Expert Tips for Recovering Post Rhinoplasty

One of the biggest concerns patients share when preparing for rhinoplasty is the fear of scarring. They worry about large visible scars on the nose after an open rhinoplasty. Schedule a consultation and we will happily discuss your options for surgery, including the likelihood of visible scarring. Much of the time, scarring is minimal and these expert tips will help to ensure your nose heals optimally.

Stay Out of the Sun

UV rays can interfere with the healing process. Too much sun after rhinoplasty can cause your scar to darken, a change that can be permanent. After rhinoplasty, stay out of the sun for several weeks. Wear a hat and lots of sunscreen if you will be outdoors. Many patients are more prone to sunburn right after surgery, especially those new scars.

Elevate Your Head

Keeping your head elevated after rhinoplasty can reduce the amount of swelling you’ll experience. Many patients sleep in a recliner for several days or use pillows to prop themselves up in bed. This can make a big difference in your appearance right after rhinoplasty and may help you feel more confident when you head back to work.

Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

We give each patient a detailed list of instructions for their recovery process. Follow these instructions carefully. Each item on the list has an important reason and you’ll heal much more effectively if you listen to our advice. If you have a question about what you can or cannot do while you heal, give us a call. We want to help make your recovery a success.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is never a good health choice, but surrounding cosmetic surgery, it can become dangerous. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which means that it decreases blood supply and can lead to ugly scarring in the best scenario or skin loss (necrosis) in the worst case. Avoid all tobacco and nicotine products (including cigarettes, nicotine gum, chewing tobacco, cigars, etc.) before and after surgery. Give yourself time to heal before resuming any form of tobacco use.

One of the best ways to increase your healing is to give your body plenty of rest. Most patients take about two weeks off from work after rhinoplasty. Rest when you’re tired and give your body time to heal. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise until you’re cleared to resume these activities.

Even with an open technique, scarring is generally minimal after rhinoplasty. Talk with us about your concerns by scheduling a consultation today.
