What Are My Incision Options for Rhinoplasty?

Do you want rhinoplasty, but worry about potential scarring? Many of our rhinoplasty patients want to transform the appearance of the nose, but don’t want to be left with visible scars. They want their new nose to look completely natural. The good news is, for most patients, visible scarring isn’t an issue. We’ll discuss specifics during your consultation, but often we can enhance the shape and function of the nose without creating a noticeable scar. Dr. Epstein is a top Chicago rhinoplasty surgeon and has extensive experience creating natural looking, balanced rhinoplasty results.

Open Rhinoplasty vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two different rhinoplasty techniques: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. In closed rhinoplasty there is no external incision. The incisions for the procedure are made inside of the nose. This eliminates the potential for visible scarring, but severely limits the level of access to the internal structures of the nose. The changes that are possible through closed rhinoplasty are limited.

Open rhinoplasty requires a small incision across the columella, or the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Through the incision sites the soft tissue that covers the nose is raised, allowing for extensive access to the underlying nasal structures. Advanced procedures, including cartilage grafting and suture techniques to create stable, beautiful, enhancements in shape, can be performed during an open rhinoplasty. Often any scarring is hidden under the nose. It is extremely rare to have a noticeable scar using this technique.  Dr. Epstein can help you determine if scarring will be an issue and what to expect.

Which Rhinoplasty Technique Is Right for Me?

Both open and close rhinoplasty can yield stunning results when performed by a skilled surgeon. Each technique has unique advantages. During your consultation, Dr. Epstein will examine your nose and discuss your goals for the procedure. He can then work with you to choose the most appropriate technique for your situation.

Open Rhinoplasty:

  • Direct visualization of the nasal structures
  • More control and precision
  • Greater opportunities for shaping the nose

Closed Rhinoplasty:

  • No visible scarring
  • Shorter operative time
  • Slightly easier recovery

We’ll help you determine which approach is most likely to yield your desired results.

Don’t let the fear of rhinoplasty scarring keep you from exploring your options. Many patients transform their nose with little to no visible scarring. Call and discuss your options today.
