How Laser Treatments Can Benefit Your Skin and You

There are so many different types of lasers and associated procedures. How does a patient choose which one is best? It is first important to identify the treatment goals. There are lasers that remove brown spots and there are lasers that can remove red spots, or more vascular type lesions. There are lasers that can reduce and sometimes remove fine lines and wrinkles and there are lasers that can tighten skin. There are lasers that reduce hair growth and there are lasers that can stimulate hair growth. Many of these procedures require multiple treatments and many can be utilized in combination to achieve multiple goals.

Photofacial treatments are ideal for skin care concerns ranging from redness caused by prominent vessels or rosacea, brown spots or hyperpigmentation from sun, and dark spots from acne scarring or hormonal imbalances. It often takes 3-6 treatments to achieve optimal results and many realize a marked difference in the overall appearance of the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing is performed to treat fine lines/wrinkles, acne scarring, and decrease pore size. The process can reverse the effects of photoaging and is capable of smoothing out uneven skin texture. It can reduce minor skin imperfections and produce an overall healthier looking complexion. These lasers work by reducing the damaged top layer (epidermis) of the skin and by increasing the production of new collagen in the deep layer (dermis). This makes the skin look smoother and tighter. Our version of this resurfacing laser is a fractionated CO2 laser, called “DOT”. By fractionating the laser beam the treatment is safer and the patients heal at a faster rate.

Hair removal lasers have greatly improved over the years. The treatments are less painful and much more effective. The ideal candidate remains a fair skinned individual with darker hair, but others can often get a positive treatment as well.

Each laser is designed to provide different results so knowing the goals can help to identify a specific treatment plan. A consultation with either Dr. Epstein, Dr. Krochmal or one of our laser treatment specialists will determine which laser best suites our patient’s needs. People that feel better about their appearance often feel better about themselves.
